16 year old sailor Zac Sunderland may become the youngest person to sail solo around the world. He left Marina del Ray, California and is now in Cape Town, South Africa. Zac, who comes from a sailing family, saved and purchased an Islander 36 sailing sloop. With the help of friends, he fitted it out with necessary equipment and supplies for the trip. Zac is home schooled and will be completing his senior year upon his return.
His route will continue to the Panama Canal and then up the western coast of Mexico to California. You can follow Zac’s journey on his blog and be sure to check out the video in the right sidebar.

Good luck and calm seas to you Zac, this will surely make a man out of him! I think the previous youngest was an Australian boy a few years ago.

that would be an awesome experience for someone so young, i just hope he stays humble. i could see how it could blow up an ego a bit. its quite an accomplishment.

It’s wonderful to read about Zac at Ask the Boater. We are so proud of him and know that this experience will help to shape and color his future. What an initiation into young adulthood. Best of wishes to Zac. Check him out in our local marine rag – The Mariner http://www.marinermagazine.com
